The medical team based at Michael Sobell Hospice is led by a senior doctor and is made up of consultants in palliative medicine, specialist palliative medicine trainee doctors and a trainee GP. The doctors provide medical leadership to the clinical teams based at Michael Sobell Hospice and the specialist palliative care teams in Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and Harefield hospitals.
The team can be involved at any stage of the disease right from diagnosis. The team is expert in all aspects of symptom control, including difficult to control pain for patients with life limiting illnesses, not only cancer but diseases such as heart failure and dementia.
The teaching and training of junior doctors is a particular strength of the team. Michael Sobell Hospice has been training junior doctors in palliative medicine for the last 20 years, and all the team have chaired and lectured on numerous study days and courses with excellent feedback.
Our doctors have lectured both locally and nationally and presented their research in international meetings and in peer reviewed journals. They are also actively involved with developing regional guidelines for specialist palliative care.
The medical team has a long history of innovation and service development including pioneering the use of syringe drivers and hosting the first ever medical trainee in palliative medicine.
