Virtual Day Therapy Unit
Date: Wednesdays, fortnightly.
Time: 11.00 am – 12.30 pm (drop in and out, as available)
Location: Zoom group
Suitable for: Anyone who was previously attending Day Therapy Unit services at Michael Sobell Hospice or Harlington Hospice or who would benefit from a referral to the service.
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we took the decision to suspend the Day Therapy Services at both Michael Sobell Hospice and Harlington Hospice, to protect our patients, volunteers and staff. In the past, our patients had said that while accessing the clinical services on offer was beneficial, being able to have regular contact with someone in a similar situation was also important. Two of the main benefits that our patients reported they got from attending the Day Therapy Unit were:
- Peer support and
- Reduction in a feeling of isolation
To help maintain contact with our patients and enable the peer support to continue, the Day Therapy Unit has gone virtual with fortnightly Zoom sessions.
The aim has been to maintain as many of the benefits and activities of a physical Day Therapy Unit as possible, in an informal way.
With our virtual Zoom sessions, patients, volunteers and staff have been able to join in online to share what they have done during the fortnight, tips on surviving isolating and even Covid safe walking routes as well as general discussions on any other topic that has been of interest. We have also shared the end results of time spent on hobbies, old and new, and participated in short quizzes.
In addition, we have welcomed new patients who, under normal circumstances, would have attended the Day Therapy Unit in person. They have been able to get to meet some of our existing patients, as well as volunteers and staff, so that when we are eventually able to restart our Day Therapy services, they will already feel part of the group.
We will look at what is important to carers, what they feel they need and how they can be supported.
